When some time ago I was working on source mimetypes for Oxygen, I also had to do the ruby source mimetype, also known as mimetypes/application-x-ruby. Before starting the icon I knew it would have had a rubin in it, then I went to the official
Ruby programming language website and realized they already had a very cool logo. So I did some research and found out there was
Ruby Visual Identity Team providing a media-kit with the logo graphics in many formats, included our beloved
SVG
The media-kit is distributed under a Creative Commons license so I get to the mailing list and asked if they could do an exception for Oxygen mimetype icon.
Yukihiro “matz” Matsumoto in person gave me permission to do so and as a mutual favor I sent the Oxygen’s ruby mimetype to the
Visual Identity Team which is probably going to include the icon in their media-kit. I really enjoyed this collaboration, it’s a nice way to promote two very cool open source projects. Later, I approached in a similar way the Python guys which have been as nice as the Ruby ones. I love those developers. Cheers.
Very nice looking icon - great to hear of the cooperation with Matz and the Ruby Visual Identity team. I hope we can make KDE4 into a killer Ruby development/scripting environment. I hope you will be able to add some Ruby icons for KDevelop4 too when we get going with adding Ruby support to that.
may I am allowed to ask, if there will be a logo for JavaScript too? At least there doesn’t seem to exit an official logo yet while http://www.kernelthread.com/compuart/pages/jscript.html does not qualify itself :)

I know, we still have to the icon for JS and the fact JS doesn’t have an official logo kinda sucks. For others languages, like Perl, we have used the popular “camel” from the O’Reill book. We’ll see. Will have to work on that one soon.

Otherwise about these mimetypes I have some doubt. I understand the reasons for use the official logos of the projects (Ruby, Python,..) but I am also thinking this disturb a little bit the homogeneity of the Oxygen project look. The Python edge is really plane instead of the Ruby one and all the other Oxygen icon. I can also understand that using the official logos the files are better identified than using something different.
I want to apologies for my english… I hope you and all users are able to understand what I mean. ( I can write in italian but I think it’s not a good idea for an international blog :P)
