A new K logo?
I had to challenge the hard task of making an Oxygen icon for Kmenu (and about-kde). It was hard because Kmenu is actually the KDE logo.
I had this idea in mind since a long time, let’s say more than one month and fortunately I didn’t forgot about it :) I wanted to do something a bit different of the usual plain badge. I’ve used a lot of gaussian blur and some clipping, which are now my favorite tools and are really defining what’s the Oxygen style. SVG rock!
Why I’m posting this? To get some feedback. Icon is on svn, as actions/about-kde and apps/kmenu.
That is one SEXY icon!
Nice work!
w000t!! I love it, I simply love it!
This is the best KDE logo for years!! Congratulations, you have made my day!!!
Beautiful.
Just don’t go too deep with the blues or you’ll end up in ugly Windows Vista territory.
Very nice.
I’d personally like to see it a little less rounded, especially in the “bulging toward me” sense, but all in all it’s very sharp. I’d be happy to see it as the logo.
Well done.
Very nice logo. My only comment is that something looks a little odd with the bottom three cogs - they seem to blend difficultly into the background. I’m not sure what others thing - but regardless, it’s only obvious in your blown up image, and the 64 - 16 pixel sizes look great!
Keep up the good work.
I like the new border.

I like it :)
…agreed on the “too-much-blue” warning, though. I’d love an aluminium version (that’s because I’m trying to avoid black for everything)
i think i would actually rock that logo.
Awesome work davigno. I’m a big fan of it. Under 48 or 32 I’d consider going with the flat-blue version of the logo - it’s a bit complex for such small sizes.
I agree with some other comments that the outline of the gear and K could be sharper. For the simplicity of a start button on a kicker, I know it’d be blasphemy, but I wonder how it’d look droping the K and centering a gear.
But at 64 pixels and larger, it’s really pleasing to the eye. Example: I think for any print work or KDE booth banners it would really shine.
Nicely done!
nice :)
looks a tiny bit odd at 22×22, though. the white part just isn’t smooth any more
Wow, that is one smoking hot logo. I am just comparing it to the old one, and this wins hands down!
Just to nit-pick: I do agree that the bottom 3 cogs look a bit strange
Keep up the fantastic work
What a beautiful icon. Is there a possibility you can post a how-to on making such an icon? I’ve been trying to make an icon to represent superuser file access (konqueror with root access) and no existing icon fits. I’d like to utilize some of the tools you used on my own and would like to learn a thing or two about image design. It looks like you have quite a knack for it.
Great work! I agree with Jonathan Giles about the blending.
NICE!!!
Really a good work!!!
But I perfectly agree with Jonathan Giles about those bottom three cogs! They are… ODD… maybe too much blurred, or maybe too much light.
I don’t like that top cogs are darker blue the bottom ones… maybe I’d like the same color for all the cogs.
Anyway you know… I’m writing about DETAILS, and this means that everything else is just awesome! Go on like that! KDE 4 will rock!

Dear David: This icon looks just great, I also liked very much the nuvola K menu logo. I have a suggestion for this button: it is the only one that cannot be easily customized on the kicker bar, it would be nice to allow it being changed to allow easy customization: for example, I like the original kde “K” icons and I dislike distros trying to rebrand kde with their own logo, like for example suse or linspire, so it would be nice to have an easy way to revert it to the original “k” (whatever your icon theme of choice is, every icon theme has a “k”)
Conversely, it would also be nice to allow for easy user customization of the icon, allowing to choose any other one, even with a checkbox for “make it my default “K” menu icon”
For extra eyecandy I would suggest a change of hue on mouse over/activation (for example, to a green or red hue).
Congratulations for your great artwork.
Best regards.
David B. (Spain)
I love it, one thing about blue, blue was allways the kde color its historical part of our heritage its not vista, its KDE.
I love it!
keep posting, please!
I think the big sizes look very nice, but from 32 and downwards i would like a little more contrast between the white and blue to make it easier on the eyes, possibly just a darker outline. Others have talked about the bottom most cogs, i actually find the left most one to be the oddest, probably because the outline blends in with the background, i find it most obvious on the largest version.
Keep up the good work :-)
Looking sweet and like the shine you have given to it.
It looks great, but it looks very similar to the KMenu icon in the KDE Crystal Diamond iconset. I know this is supposed to be new KDE Logo :)

keep up the good work
I think it looks nice, I just fear it won’t do so for long. The icon contains a lot of detail and just looks “heavy”. These properties remind me of Keramik, the old widget style. It was great for a week and then became too much for the eyes.
I’d prefer something simpler, easier and faster to “understand”. I know, I’m not very helpful… :(
wow nice stuff, love it!!!
Hate to say so, but I don’t like it. The bottom of the logo is way to blurry. A logo should look sharp
Simply awesome
Absolutely beautiful!
love it :)
ROCK ON!!, I love it man, this is simply the best KDE icon in years
It’s quite great but there’s something wrong with the gear’s bottom border.
Thanks david! That is an awsome logo. One comment, on the lower sizes it is hard to distinguish the top of the “K” because the large amount of white in the middle top. Consider making it a little darker so that it doesn’t blend in with the K as much. Just an idea, but feel free to email me if you don’t understand what I mean.
Thanks for all your hard work!
Looks really nice :-)
But I noticed one sentence: “It was hard because Kmenu is actually the KDE logo.”
IMO this is a problem. It means “the KDE logo is a button with a gear and a K on it”. That’s very much different from: “the KDE logo is a gear with a K”.
So we don’t have a gear as our logo, but our logo is a button with something on it.
Am I the only one with this opinion ?
Bye
Alex
Sorry to AOL here, but: me too!
Looks great, I like the slightly etched 3d effect on the K and the cog and appreciate that its not over the top. The lowest res version loses a little, but that can’t really be avoided. It would be nice to have a few other (oxygen pallet compat, of course) coloured versions to blend with different win deco colour schemes.
I like that icon. Just one question. There was a discussion not so long ago in the comments of dot.kde.org which had to do with color schemes. I don’t know whether this is possible but quit some users who change their color schemes would like to have their icons in the same color(s). For instance, the Kmenu icon would need to be brown with a brown color scheme. Is that possible? I mean having the icon colored depending on the settings. It would be great.
At first I thought this was a proposal for the new KDE logo, but with your blog entry it was clear that it was for the Kmenu. Previously I thought it was too rich, and complex for the KDE logo, but seeing in the position that it was for the k menu, it looks awesome.
Great work as usual from the Oxygen Team.
As a logo I like it. As the menu button, not so. I was never fond of this quadratic box “backgroud”.
About the gear border:
i think I felt this TOP: dark -> BOTTOM: light gradient was the best way to give the impression of roundness of the badge.
But I can see the bottom light blue is maybe to close to white.
I’ll try work on that.
About small versions:
For the kmenu icon, I’ll provide 16×16 version, and working on the K cog border will probably help to make it look more sharp.
About logo:
I think this is an icon. I also prefer plain color for logo and in fact the KDE logo is a rounded corner blue square with the traditional K cog. That’s the logo. What you see here is an icon, a very detailed one in the Oxygen style. In the past the Crystal kmenu icon have been used as KDE logo in many places just because more appealing, I think the same will happen with this new version.
@ gemidjy: Since the icon is basically the same thing, a blue square with KDE logo in white, It’s really hard to make the icons not be look similar. Remember THIS the starting point. But if you instead link to a big version (>128×128) of the Crystal Diamond icon and compare to the big version of the Oxygen version you’ll see the icons represent the same logo but are completely different.
This icon is really great for the KDE logo.
But if we speak about KMenu icon is this possible to make KMenu icon animated? Something similar to the icon of the openSuse’s 10.2 Kickoff menu icon. I think that in KDE 4 new menu icon can have animated gear. I mean “K” letter stands still but the gear rotating when you click on KMenu.
Thanks,
Serhiy
I like it, but agree with a comment above saying that logos should be sharp, and the bottom part of this one looks too blurry. Other than that, the idea is fine.
it doesn’t look very vertically symtrical. The top looks very different from the bottom. Fix that, and it’ll be a sweet, shiny, sexy logo!
Great ! This new KDE logo is awesome.
I loved the old one, but you managed to make one even better, congratulations.
NICE !!! :)
Looking clean! Let’s beat Apple to it. Graphics appeal to users.

i’d say that newer logo is much better than the current one, maybe the “K” could look better….you may want to add some shadows, borders or whatever..
I think the very bottom of the gear is much too blurry. There should be more defined edges on the K and the gear. I think that would make a better icon.
I don’t think I like the slanted top/bottom edges of the letter, though I know that style has been in use since forever. I was always a fan of a more serious look, after all to me the first associations with the KDE gear are total technical and aesthetic superiority, like some weapon that is so massive and sophisticated, anyone hit by it won’t even know what hit them :)
Then again my KDE color scheme right now is various shades of grey with very sparing use of color. I called it “battleship” :) Maybe I should make a theme in this vein, with gritty textures and all, to appeal to the “this box is a weapon not a toy” crowd :)
This one is just perfect. I love it!

Amazing…. when new logo came with KDE 3.5.x series, it looked very good… and it still looks… but this! This makes KDE looks more professional… again…

Nice logo, very cool unique effect. When designing a logo, one should think about on paper versions, black and white and grayscale. But the nuvola icon has its charm too.

KDE logo already exist. It’s here. This is the Kmenu icon, that often is used as KDE logo in non printed stuff like websites, presentationsa and so on.
Nice, but there is too much blur on the bottom.
@ Serhiy
I don’t know if an animation would be useful there, but I think is technically possible, even if we haven’t tryed any SVG animation yet. I guess the oSuse one is an MNG, basically animated PNG.
@ kwilliam
the difference is given by the ambient light that create reflexion on a sort of glass that’s covering the badge.
So fuckin beautiful.
inkscape.org@ Daniel
I see you work at Apple, so it will probably easy to you to get a mac with Illustrator installed ;) That’s what I use all the time Illustrator and Inkscape. But I prefer to draw with Illustrator which is way powerful editor. But when doing SVG files, like all the Oxygen icons I finish the icons in Inkscape, which is a better SVG editor, since it allow things like gradients color-to-transparency, gradients inside borders and have a very easy to use blur effect.
I know there some rockstar icon designer working at Apple, you should ask them also ;)
[…] I know that David Vignoni just posted this to get input from people, however I really do hope it makes the cut. How must more beautiful can you get? […]
kde-look.orgwhat do you think of raising the “K and gear” above the background, to give it a 3D appearance? since 3D is blossoming all over the GNU landscape.
Similar to the raised effect of “onlyK”

this might let you play with lighting effects without getting the bluring into the background
It looks good. However, looking at the small (32) image next to my current Kmenu button, it doesn’t look too different. I’d recommend distinguishing them a little more.

To be honest, I don’t think this should be a new klogo. It would be fine on the menu (maybe), but I like the current one - Clean a simple.
Thanks for the rest of Oxygen!
That’s a really awesome K…
Just can’t wait for KDE 4.

Que bonito!!!! Really nice icon!
Suggested KDE logo…
David Vignoni has suggested a new Oxygen ready KDE logo. A face-lift are required to make it play nice with the other Oxygen icons. This icon could be a part of the Oxygen icon set for KDE 4.
A closer look
I think the icon is too blurry, and that it…
LOVE IT as a logo (though I never found the K with the gear all that attractive), but what about doing the same thing in other shapes like for instance a circle so that those persons who do not like a quadratic K-Menu-Button very much can switch to other K-Menu icons while still keeping this gorgeous oxygen style?
I don’t like it, not because it doesn’t look good by itself, but I don’t like the idea of having the KMENU icon be the KDE logo. I think it should be different. Using the logo as a start icon only works if you have something incredibly simple like the apple icon, or the windows flag. The KDE logo is too complicated and detailed for this. I also don’t like the blue box shape. I’ve seen it in other themes and always change it. It does not blend well with the rest of the taskbar and looks tacky.
