We have a fight
Well not really. I was about to propose new player buttons but Nuno was faster then me and already blogged about his new icons.I kinda like the one he did but I had in mind something simpler and so here there are my proposals. Fight!

OK they are very good you dont know how to do bad work.
I still like the blue ones beter but this ones Rock.
Both submissions look very impressive. Since I haven’t seen them together with the other icons, it’s hard for me to decide. I think I would opt for your submission though.
Anyway, whichever will be chosen, it will look refreshing!
Looks good, but why does everything need to be in a circle? The human eye is great at recognizing shape, so throwing all that away by putting everything in a circle seems a bit silly. The back/forward/up buttons in the old crystal icon set all look the same because they’re all circular. Now the playback controls are also all circular. What’s the point?
Actually the second sample could either be the pressed or inactive state of the first. :)
@ required: good point :)
About the roundness, look at any media device you have at home i say like the 90% of theose devices and remotes have round butons, relating to real life is a good thing, not bad
I vote for the Style 1! :)

You are completely right. I also ask myself why all this playback control icons are circular. That makes it harder to distinguish them.
is it possible to make color independent buttons?
that then I use grey color scheme they will get dark grey and then I use black window background color the buttons will become white?
I like them a lot better than pinheiro’s. His blue ones remind me of the fat old Keramik-Theme, it looks like a blue piece of cheese that’s been melting in the sun.
I also like the old icons on pinheiros page better than his new ones.
Both your icons and Nuno’s are a definite improvement. Personally, I like the smooth style of Nuno’s blue icon better than the sharp black/white look of your one. But both icons are quite cool.
Nevertheless, I wonder why both of you have omitted a 22×22 version. After all, this is what most media buttons will likely be sized by default.

Although all these sets look great, count me in the “do we need the circle” crowd. When I hover my mouse over the toolbar, the icons are made to look like buttons, so having the “play” symbol in a circle is redundant. It looks like a button-on-a-button. Also, by removing the circle, you have more room for the play symbol itself, making it more distinguishable at smaller sizes. That’s just my non-artist opinion. Thanks to you both for all the great work.
I think the reason that player buttons are comonly being drawn inside a circle is because in the real world, those buttons are seen as buttons on stereo/dvd players remotes. We should may see if we can avoid the button effects to be applyed to these kind of actions.
These are definitely an improvement over the blue icons shown the other day (which were good themselves). If things are going to keep improving at this rate, I hope you two keep putting out revisions for the next week or so!
Still, the black/white icons seems more KDE4 or ‘oxygen’ than the blue/white icons which seem more KDE3 or ‘…stik’.
Just one person’s opinion.
Your style 1 gets my vote.
Both yours and Pinheiro’s are great, but I happen to like yours more.
OK after beeing ripped apart by the competition i declare david’s wineer of the first great Oxygen fight!
Next time you lose baby!
@ pinheiro: thanks man ;) going to submit … soon
eek! I like the blue ones by david much better. They need to be tested together with all the other icons on the desktop though.
quick suggestion: if we end up having multiple icons that are good in other categories as well, could we make two different oxygen sets for the next development release of kde4 so that it would be easy to switch and check which is better?
thanks for all the hard work!
Hmm, I like these one more than the blue ones. Somehow I do not like too colourfull screens. I would like to see at least two themes, one more plain thing for plain-style-loving people and one bubble gum style for those who want to get eye cancer. ;)
@ Vlad: you mean blue ones by Nuno.
These icons look great, both variants! I like the reflections a lot. Both of Nuno’s versions look odd. Their inner “sickle” highlight makes them look asymmetrical — convex in the upper half, but concave in the lower. Irritating and unpleasant to look at. Not that one looks a lot at the high resolution versions, of course. (Sorry Nuno. :-)
Style 1!
Imho the earlier blue ones look best, then the black ones, these 2 last (sorry….)
And I’d love to see a try without the circle around them, though I’m not sure it’ll look good.
I prefer yours, specially Style 1.
But I do agree with Louis. I think we should explore the possibility of dropping the circle it will make it easier to find the correct button, specially at small sizes.
These are better. Good work. They are prettier, and also they are very sharp and easy to recognise.
I tend to agree with Leo, I think the shape inside circles should be avoided.
if it’s used on the player icons in order to relate with the real life hardware it’s ok, but I think that for the back/forward buttons should be avoided
I think these are the best. The blue one is not bad, but the two other styles are better.
I think Pinheiro does absolutely wonderful things but these buttons are superb David!
I love the contrast and the openness of the design. I think they’re very airy and modern looking I would prefer style 1 over 2 just because 2 makes me squint my eyes like my glasses or my screen is dirty
Excellent job!
Pretty unrelated, but I just realized something. Monitor manufacturers charge charge premium for monitors that are not glossy. And here we are adding the glossiness back in on buttons and whatnot :)
@ Aron Stansvik
“Monitor manufacturers charge charge premium for monitors that are not glossy. And here we are adding the glossiness back in on buttons and whatnot :)”
but that’s just a very soft glossiness. nothing to do with Crystal. And I don’t see the connection between the monitors that of course are more expensive if they avoid “reflections”. With a monitor like that you’ll fully enjoy the beauty there is in an icons with a soft glossy effect like this ;)
The second style is better in my opinion because it emphasizes the function (play with the triangle, stop with the square) over the surrounding frame (circle). There is no need for a sharp frame that interferes with the “functional shape”.
My vote is for style one, and by extension the arrows-inside-black-circles action icons which replaced the green ones. Black recedes cleanly, especially on such common icons, letting more particular, local actions stand out. To my eye, these play buttons and the arrows both look very light, kinda faded, but maybe I don’t realize how dark they’ll look in context.
